Today we awoke to the drumming of rain…and hail here and there.
But on race day, it is what it is so you dress for the weather, (then change your mind 10 times before the start of the race).
5 Founder’s team members decided to race today: Ralf chose to ride the Lowell 50, or 41, or 60…depending on which sign he followed. Rick, Danielle S., and Tenner & Marnie opted for the 27 miler. When the starter mumbled a few words at the line…something about 50 miles or 50-year-olds…a big group containing both 27 and 50- mile racers took off. A few minutes later we heard a “3-2-1-go” so apparently, the rest of the 27 milers were off: Over the covered bridge, past Flat River, then UP the muddy hill. We hit lots of wet gravel roads and true to Michigan weather, the sun came out! It was a beautiful ride through the country as the fall leaves were lit by the sun. Everyone was pretty mud-covered by the sprint finish up the hill. We put tags on a spindle, similar to KISSCROSS, then headed back down to the pavilion for soup, bread, apples, FOUNDER’S BREAKFAST ALE and hot apple cider.
As we waited for the results in the chilly breeze, Rick and Tenner foraged thru the Fallasburg Park looking for timber to build a fire. The confused 50 milers started rolling in saying they only logged 41 miles. Later, a few more came in saying they did 60. Apparently there were some sign bandits out that day causing havoc with the intended route.
By the time the entire posse finished, (2hours later) the results were announced. Tenner took 3rd in his age group and Marnie took 1st in hers. Being over 50, Rick probably could have had better placement if the other “50+ group” didn’t leave with the first group. Danielle rode her single speed and spent her time spinning on the flats, the only SS women in the 27 miler!
Overall, it was a great fall day for riding!
